CBTE Must Count the Cost of Credibility
CBTE may reduce relocation and classroom costs, but credible formation requires sustained investment in mentors, assessment, learner protection, digital evidence, recognition and independent quality assurance.
Formation Evidence Must Protect the Learner
CBTE needs evidence of knowing, being and doing, but spiritual formation must never become intrusive surveillance, coerced disclosure or unreviewable mentor judgement.
Competence Must Survive Graduation
CBTE becomes credible when the qualities demonstrated during training remain visible in graduates’ ministry, leadership, learning and service after the portfolio has closed.
Recognition Requires a Bridge, Not a Shortcut
Bible-college CBTE can widen access and strengthen ministry formation, but national recognition and university progression require explicit translation between competences, qualifications, credits and academic authority.
Formation Cannot Be Reduced to a Character Score
Bible colleges need credible evidence of spiritual and character formation, but no instrument can measure the Holy Spirit or justify unchecked judgement over a learner.
A Badge Must Not Promise What It Cannot Recognise
Micro-credentials can widen access to ministry formation, but every badge must state what was assessed, who assures its quality and whether it carries ecclesial, institutional or nationally recognised value.
CBTE Must Prove What It Promises
Competence-based theological education will earn public trust only when its claims about formation, access, affordability and ministry effectiveness are tested through transparent, independent and longitudinal evidence.
Mentoring Is Infrastructure, Not Free Labour
CBTE becomes credible only when mentor teams are selected, formed, supported, supervised and resourced as part of the educational system rather than treated as an unlimited supply of church volunteers.
Experience Is Not Evidence of Ministry Competence
Prior ministry experience can shorten a learner's pathway, but credible CBTE must verify present competence through authentic evidence, trained judgement, moderation and fair appeal.
