Continuity Is Not a Succession Plan
A short extension or interim appointment can protect an institution during transition. It becomes responsible governance only when the mandate, conflicts, limits, successor process, handover and end point are explicit.
A chief executive leaves suddenly. A search has not produced an agreed successor. A difficult strategy still needs to be executed. The governing body responds with a one-year extension, an acting appointment or an interim leader. Operations continue and immediate uncertainty reduces.
That response may be prudent. It may also allow the institution to postpone the harder work: defining the leadership now required, managing concentrated power, developing credible candidates, transferring knowledge and deciding when temporary authority must end.
Continuity is not a succession plan. It is one objective within succession governance. Responsible leaders use temporary continuity to protect purpose while moving the institution toward a legitimate and capable permanent arrangement. They do not allow the bridge to become the destination simply because it carries today's traffic.
