Pentecostal Calling Must Grow Into Tested Competence
A call to ministry begins formation; it does not complete it. Pentecostal churches need Spirit-filled, biblically serious, supervised and accountable pathways from calling to lifelong competence.
Pentecostal testimony often begins with a call. A believer describes a burden in prayer, a word received in worship, a repeated conviction, a gift recognised by the congregation or an unexpected opening for ministry. Such stories matter because Pentecostalism has never believed that Christian leadership is produced by academic selection alone. The Spirit calls, equips and sends people whom institutions may not have noticed.
Yet a call is not a completed ministry. It is an invitation into formation. The preacher who can move a congregation may still need to learn how to interpret a difficult text. The evangelist who prays boldly may still need safeguarding competence. The pastor who loves people may still need to manage conflict, money, confidential information, digital communication and professional referral. Spiritual intensity does not remove these responsibilities; it makes their faithful exercise more urgent.
The false choice between anointing and education has therefore become costly. At one extreme, theological learning is treated as a threat to the Spirit. At the other, a certificate is treated as sufficient evidence of a formed minister. Pentecostal calling must grow into tested competence: biblical understanding, Christlike character and trustworthy practice discerned over time by the Church, educators, mentors and the communities a minister serves.
