Prosperity Must Become Economic Discipleship

A congregation gathers in a season of rising household costs, uncertain work and intense aspiration. The preaching declares that God is able. People pray with hope, give sacrificially and testify that no condition is beyond divine intervention. Yet many leave without a plan for debt, skills, work, enterprise, savings, mutual support or the economic systems shaping their struggle.

The problem is not that Pentecostals expect God to act. Hope is one of the movement's gifts to people whom institutions and elites have often taught to accept limitation. The problem begins when hope is reduced to an exchange: believe strongly, speak positively, give to a platform and expect wealth as the proof that God has responded.

Pentecostal economic witness needs a fuller grammar. Prayer, providence and generosity belong with work, knowledge, discipline, community, justice, lament and institutional responsibility. Prosperity must become economic discipleship.
