A New Generation of Leaders Needs More Than a New Mindset

A conference gathers a thousand established and emerging leaders. Speakers call for a new mindset, a new generation and a new future. Participants leave inspired, connected and determined to lead differently.

Then they return to institutions where consequential decisions remain concentrated, development is detached from real work, promising people receive observation but not authority, succession begins after a vacancy and loyalty is easier to measure than readiness. The language changed. The leadership system did not.

Africa needs purposeful leaders, and mindset matters. But a mindset is an orientation, not an appointment standard, operating model or evidence of public value. A new generation becomes a leadership generation only when institutions give people a fair route from potential to responsibility, from learning to tested practice and from authority to accountability.

The Africa Mindset Reset Forum concludes in Kigali today, 26 August. Convened by the African School of Governance, the forum describes itself as an Africa-led gathering focused on the leadership mindset and results culture required for the continent to own its development. Its programme connects governance, regional integration, state effectiveness, resource stewardship, education, dignified work, agrifood systems and execution.
