Pentecostal Strength Must Make Room for Pastoral Vulnerability

A pastor may lead a congregation in fervent prayer, preach hope to a grieving family and counsel a distressed member, then discover that there is no safe sentence with which to describe the pastor's own weariness.

Pentecostal communities rightly testify that the Holy Spirit strengthens weak people. The danger begins when that testimony is turned into a demand that an anointed leader must never appear sad, overwhelmed, uncertain or in need of help. Strength becomes performance, silence becomes proof of faith and ordinary human distress is hidden until a crisis makes it public.

The Spirit does not require this pretence. Pentecostal strength must make room for pastoral vulnerability: truth told with appropriate boundaries, received without spectacle, and answered through prayer, friendship, competent care, shared ministry and responsible governance.

The Pastors Africa Gathering is scheduled to open in Kenya on 18 August and run through 23 August. Its organiser advertises leadership training, pastoral renewal, ministry networking, healing for ministry burnout, church-growth teaching, prayer, worship and participation by more than one thousand pastoral leaders.

Renewal Summit 2026 is already under way in Uganda from 17 to 21 August.
