Pentecostal Worship Must Form a Congregation, Not Only Fill a Room

A worship leader begins a familiar chorus. Thousands stand, hands rise and voices gather into one sound. The room carries expectancy, tears, prayer and the confession that Jesus is Lord. A livestream carries the moment far beyond the venue.

Then the final chord fades. Some worshippers return to congregations where they are known and formed. Others return only to playlists and clips. A volunteer who helped create the atmosphere remains unheard in ministry decisions. A new believer remembers the feeling but cannot explain the gospel proclaimed by the songs. A person who responded for prayer does not know who will accompany the next step.

The gathering may have been sincere and spiritually significant. The Pentecostal question begins there; it does not end there.

Pentecostal worship must form a congregation, not only fill a room. Encounter should become scriptural understanding, shared participation, holy character, accountable relationships, pastoral care and service to neighbour. A powerful atmosphere is a gift. A people shaped by the Spirit is the fruit.
