A Successor Needs More Than the Chair

A board announces a new chief executive. Photographs are taken, speeches honour the outgoing leader and the successor receives the title. On the official date, email signatures, reporting lines and public biographies change.

Yet difficult decisions still travel to the former leader. Important relationships remain personal rather than institutional. Staff compare every choice with the previous style. The successor carries accountability without possessing the knowledge, trust or decision space required to act.

The appointment has occurred. The succession has not.

A successor needs more than the chair. Responsible succession transfers authority, strategic knowledge, relationships, cultural legitimacy and accountability while allowing the incoming leader to become a real leader rather than the custodian of another person’s unfinished tenure.

Seplat Energy’s announced chief-executive transition reaches its formal boundary today. The Nigerian energy company stated in June that Roger Brown would retire as chief executive and board director on 31 July 2026 after thirteen years with the company, including six as chief executive. Effiong Okon is due to assume the chief-executive and executive-director roles on 1 August.

The company’s official announcement describes an internal successor who has served as operations director, new-energy director and managing director of a major gas-processing project. It also connects the transition to continuity in strategy, governance and execution, while identifying the incoming chief executive’s immediate focus as delivery of the company’s 2030 roadmap.
