Great Leaders Cannot Outperform a Misaligned System

A governing body recruits an accomplished chief executive. The appointment is celebrated as a turning point. Yet the board retains operational decisions, senior roles carry overlapping mandates, budgets reward yesterday’s priorities and performance reports count activities that do not reveal public or institutional value.

The new leader works longer, communicates more forcefully and personally resolves disputes that the structure keeps producing. For a season, energy rises. Then the same delays, rivalries and contradictions return.

The problem is not necessarily a lack of leadership talent. It is a system asking one person to compensate for misalignment among authority, people, strategy and evidence.

Great leaders matter. They matter most when they build an institution in which responsible leadership can travel through the whole system.

A systematic review published on 28 July 2026 examined strategic leadership across elite sport organisations. The authors screened 309 records from three academic databases and included 38 empirical studies covering federations, professional clubs and leagues.

The review identifies three interdependent pillars: governance and structure, leadership and human capital, and strategic and performance systems. High performance is presented as an emergent property of dynamic alignment among these pillars rather than the product of one leadership style, governance template or management tool.
