Pentecostal Public Witness Must Welcome Evidence, Not Fear It

Pentecostal Christianity is now a major public force across Africa and the wider world. That growth is a reason for gratitude, but it is also a reason for deeper responsibility. Whenever religious leaders shape schools, families, media, public policy or local economies, our convictions must be tested not only by the strength of our language but also by the quality of the life we help to produce.

This is why serious research should not make Pentecostals defensive. Good research can expose weak assumptions, identify unintended effects and help the Church distinguish genuine transformation from activity that merely appears successful. We do not surrender revelation by receiving evidence. We practise truthfulness, humility and neighbour-love.

A 2026 preprint by Marcela Mello and João Garcia studies close municipal elections in Brazil. Using a regression-discontinuity design, the authors report that mayors from parties institutionally linked to Pentecostal denominations were associated with reduced provision of sexual-education programmes in municipal middle schools and with adverse adolescent outcomes in the studied setting. The paper is not a judgement on every Pentecostal leader, every church or every African country. It is a context-specific preprint that still requires the scrutiny of peer review and careful engagement with local realities.
