The Digital Harvest Needs More Than Reach: A Pentecostal Techno-Theology from Africa

A significant new contribution to this conversation appeared only four days ago. In The Digital Harvest: Reimagining Mission, Community and Stewardship in the Age of Pentecostal E-Megachurches, published on 6 July 2026, African scholar Nomatter Sande argues that digital tools are now shaping Pentecostal mission, discipleship, community development and stewardship. Livestreaming, virtual prayer networks, artificial intelligence, online courses and digital giving are no longer optional additions at the edge of ministry. They are becoming part of the environment in which ministry itself is imagined and practised.

We should be precise about the evidence. Sande’s work is a qualitative, theological-conceptual analysis of secondary sources, not a statistical survey of every Pentecostal congregation. Its value is therefore constructive rather than universally predictive: it identifies emerging possibilities, tensions and theological questions. Those questions matter within a movement that the Status of Global Christianity 2026 estimates now includes approximately 676 million Pentecostal and charismatic Christians. The same report places 69 per cent of all Christians in the Global South. The implication is clear: digital Pentecostalism can no longer be discussed as a Western innovation later exported to Africa. Africa is one of the places where its theology, ethics and future must now be shaped.
