AI Must Form People, Not Merely Produce Answers

On 3 July 2026, UNESCO-UNEVOC published Integrating AI in TVET: A Practical Guide for Institutions, followed by its formal launch on 6 July. Its importance lies less in recommending another collection of tools than in changing the unit of responsibility. AI integration is no longer presented as the private experiment of an enthusiastic lecturer. It is an institution-wide process involving governance, curriculum, pedagogy, assessment, staff competency, innovation, safety, monitoring and evaluation.

Together with the OECD’s June AI Literacy Framework, this signals a welcome maturing of the conversation. The question is no longer simply whether teachers and students will use AI; many already do. The deeper question is what kind of learners, ministers, professionals and institutions will emerge from that use. UNESCO places educational purpose, human agency, equity and safety at the centre. Christian education must add an equally serious concern: formation into truth, wisdom, character and faithful service.

The OECD Digital Education Outlook 2026 gives us one of the year’s most important educational distinctions. General-purpose generative AI can help students produce better work without necessarily helping them become more capable. In some studies reviewed by the OECD, the advantage visible while students used AI disappeared, and sometimes reversed, when access was removed. A polished answer can therefore conceal an unformed mind.
